Abstract:

Steering clear of the current moment in Lebanon during the frank dialogue with Shaykh Na'im Qasim, Hezbollah's second in command, means listening to this party's philosophy on a series of issues under discussion, not only at the level of the elite but also at the level of the Arab street itself. We told Shaykh Qasim from the start that we have questions the Arab man is asking about Hezbollah's stands on some dossiers and events. He insisted on being asked any question and said he was ready to answer it frankly and clearly. The meeting was held hours after listening to Shaykh Qasim on Al-Risalah radio addressing the scholars' conference and insisting on the disappearance of Israel which he called a cancerous cell in the nation's body for 61 years. The resistance was able to stop the growth of this cell -Qasim says -and asked why do we not stop its growth further? Who said we cannot defeat Israel? He insists that the nation wants Palestine from the sea to the river and does not want the two-state option and asserts that "as far as we are concerned, Israel is an entity that should be wiped out completely and I can say we might not do this -wiping it out - today but we are saying this so that the people do not forget." [Qasim] Regarding Iran, we should not forget that it suffered from an eight-year war with Saddam Husayn's Iraq and paid a very heavy price. At that time, the whole world stood with and supported Saddam Husayn. So what should we expect from Tehran on whom Saddam imposed a long war when it had been just established. There was a problem between Iran and the Iraqi regime at that time and warring countries usually have their own way of settling their countries. For me, Iran seized the opportunity of the world getting rid of Saddam Husayn's card as the latter had seized the opportunity of the world support for him against Iran in the eight-year war.
